Need something to do tonight? Here are two awesome art exhibits

If you’ve been here long enough to love Las Vegas, mourn and welcome its changes, study its ongoing metamorphosis and pay homage to its decaying and demolished landmarks, you’ll want to be at the Fifth Street School tonight for the opening of Decade, a photography exhibit curated by artist Erin Stellmon that documents downtown’s evolution through works by artists of diverse backgrounds and styles.

Rather than a somber lamentation, Decade offers a warm goodbye to what is lost and celebrates the next decade of things to come. Artists include Catherine Borg, Clay Heximer and Joel Rosales. Borg, a Las Vegas multimedia artist, born and raised in the Bay Area, has surveyed and documented the city with video audio, photography, drawing and sculpture. Heximer, a lifelong Las Vegan resident with a rock and roll background, approaches his work with a DIY mentality and, Stellmon says, uses his images as his own personal note taking. Rosales, another Las Vegas native, uses a Holga camera to depict his love and fascination with the valley's abandoned architecture and sites.

Wednesday’s opening will be from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth St.

On other days, visitors can see the exhibit by appointment only by calling the City of Las Vegas Office of Cultural Affairs, 229-6511.

At the Bellagio

How does the art taste? Aged, dry, full-bodied, complex, simple, fleshy, nutty, velvety and/or robust? Do you want a tart-edge with that hard-edge?

Find out what Master Sommelier Jason Smith (who is also Bellagio's director of wine) pairs with contemporary mixed media works, cubism and traditional pop art Wednesday night at the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art’s Art & Wine: A Perfect Pairing. Smith teams with Tarisa Tiberti, director of Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art to pair the hotel's cellar with the Figuratively Speaking: A Survey of the Human Form exhibit, which covers various artists’ approach to figurative works throughout different eras and has been extended through March 27. The ongoing pairing, happening every second Wednesday of each month, is held from 5 p.m.- 7 p.m. Admission is $25 for BGFA members and $33 for nonmembers. Guests must be 21 or older, 693-7871.
