It’s impossible to become a great country artist without having at least a sliver of self-awareness for the genre’s more ridiculous tendencies. From the moment Kacey Musgraves and company took the stage in matching country gentleman suits donned with flashing, battery-powered Christmas lights and surrounded by neon cacti, it was clear they’re not only aware of those tendencies, but embrace them, as well. Still, no flashing suit could outshine Musgraves' beauty, and while it’d be easy to relegate Musgraves to country Barbie status, she’s far too talented to be pigeonholed as just a pretty face. Unlike many of her genre contemporaries, she writes all her own songs, and they are full of witty, small-town-influenced lyrics, sung in beautiful melodies by Musgraves and every member of the band. To say that the rising country star was out of place from the rest of the festival bill is an understatement, but her raw talent was a welcome change of pace. Musgraves’ genuine delivery is incomparable; she seems poised to carry the strong female country star crown forged by Emmylou Harris proudly. Life Is Beautiful capped the final leg of her Same Trailer, Different Park tour and the band fittingly closed their set with an a cappella version of “Happy Trails,” a proper send-off for the Sunday evening.
