Lineup: Vocalist Kevin Chaparro, drummer Fidel Romero, bassist Johnny Esquivel and guitarists Derek Welker and Michaelangelo Gonzalez. The band formed in early 2015 and has gone through several lineup changes since, but the current group, featuring LVHC vets, was solidified late last year.

Sound: Loud and fast—quick spurts of sonic savagery with a compassionate message that’s “fast, fun and extremely energetic,” Chaparro says. Blink, and you’ll miss it.

Spin: “Michael’s Song”—a skittering outburst of brash punk fury that transitions into dissonant riffing à la Adolescents—before coming full circle.

Influences: The entire spectrum of hardcore/punk, from the groovy bounce and unrestrained chaos of CBGB matinee stalwarts Madball and Youth of Today, to modern champions of the genre like Have Heart or Trapped Under Ice. It’s all there, with a vegan message. “[Lyrically,] I am heavily influenced by the writings of [animal rights activists] Gary Yorufsky and Gary L. Francione, as well as [outspoken vegan bands/artists such as] Earth Crisis and Morrissey,” Chaparro says.

Building momentum: The band just returned from a five-show California run with fellow scene stalwarts Oversight, an experience Chaparro calls “amazing.” Iron Palm is planning an expanded regional trek come summertime.

Goals: Plain and simple—vegan outreach. “Outreach of a compassionate, empathetic and loving lifestyle is the sole reason we exist [as a band],” Chaparro says. “We have extended that mentality to other issues of inequality and social justice.”

Next show: None booked, but there are a few in the works, including a benefit gig for Planned Parenthood.

Social media: Instagram only— @IronPalmLV. Seems like the band is following the age-old tradition of “ask a punk.” Posers, beware.
