The construction of those costumes, and the show itself, ends Sunday night after more than 2,200 performances since opening night (February 13, 2003). The show supplanted Chicago, which opened the theater in 1999.
Along the way, the production piled up the stats—315 (miles of thread for costume repairs), 4,500 (tequila shots thrown back during the “Gimme Gimme” bachelorette party scene, 56,000 (number of bobby pins used to secure the hair of the performers—we assume female performers—while onstage) and 70,000 (number of sequins used to decorate The Dynamos’ costumes).
Lion King takes the stage on April 22, and for those keeping score at home that’s show No. 1.
