It seems that we can’t get away from guns these days. They’re everywhere—in movie theaters, at Dairy Queen, on the front page. Here are just three recent signs that it’s time to have the gun debate everyone’s been avoiding:
• A Sparks, Nevada, man accidentally shot himself in the butt with a gun—in a movie theater. No one else was hurt and the dude apologized, but in post-Aurora America, movie theaters already feel like shaky ground. Can it be long before we walk through metal detectors just to watch ParaNorman?
• A report released this month from Mayors Against Illegal Guns ranks Nevada among the worst states for submitted mental health records to the national background check system—only 724 out of 21,870 records. Really, Nevada? Do we want just anyone able to buy an easy-to-use deadly weapon?
• A quote for the ages from Wolf Pack wide receiver Brandon Wimberly, who took part in the first fall camp practice this month after a gunshot wound in 2011 nearly ended his career: “If I named everybody I knew who’s been shot, we’d be here all day.” We have nothing to add to that—only our condolences.
