As We See It

Conversation Starters: Why a Massachusetts town needs to flip the bird and more

Strip Angels We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again: Las Vegas takes care of its own. Casino mogul Steve Wynn gave an “anonymous” gift of $2 million to the United Way of Southern Nevada, which meant $500 gift cards for 4,000 families on hard times. And with Nevada having the highest unemployment rate in the entire country, nowhere is charity more important. To Wynn, Sheldon Adelson and the rest of our state’s benevolent philanthropists … good lookin’ out, guys.

Village of the Damn No f*cking way! Earlier this month, residents of Middleborough, Massachusetts, voted 183-50 at a town meeting to make swearing in public punishable by a $20 fine. Despite public officials insisting the bylaw is not meant to be a form of censorship, protestors have swooped down on Middleborough to flash middle fingers. Let’s hope the protests continue; unless we want our towns looking like the one from Footloose, we gotta speak up against uptight a**holes!

Image Disaster Well, it’s official: North Las Vegas has been declared a disaster area. The financially strapped city declared a state of emergency, which will save it $9 million and allow it to forestall laying off hundreds of employees. While we understand the rationale behind the unprecedented move (in Nevada, at least), we worry about the area’s image in years to come. Can you ever wash off the stigma of a “disaster” area, even when things return to normal? ... If they return to normal?
