Stone Brewing brings back Ruination with a 2.0 double IPA

Image

When beloved San Diego County-based brewery Stone Brewing Co. discontinued its staple Ruination ale, a few of us at the Weekly might have shed a few tears into our (potentially) last pints of the solid suds selection. But fear not, fellow hopheads—Ruination is back!

Late last month the brewery released Ruination Double IPA 2.0, an update on the initial version and what Stone calls a “liquid poem to the glory of the hop.” And as we’re pretty serious Stone fans, we had to give it as taste.

As Centennial hops remain central to the brew’s composition, Ruination’s signature over-the-top hoppiness has remained intact in the 2.0 version. But even though this new variety is a double IPA (with 100+ IBUs and an ABV of 8.5% —wow!), somehow the hoppiness is balanced with a somewhat sweet malt and strong notes of citrus, specifically grapefruit (yum!). The result is a remarkably easy-drinking DIPA (is that an oxymoron?), and this Stone fan likes it better than the predecessor. (Though another Ruination fan in our office disagrees.) Go forth and imbibe!
