Let’s face it: We’re a gun-happy country. We like to shoot, cradle a Smith & Wesson from time to time, feel safe in our homes. And God forbid we somehow feel a threat to our Preciouses—remember all the gun nuts buying ammunition by the truckful in anticipation of a violation of their civil rights that never had a chance of coming to pass? Now comes the predictable ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, upholding every law-abiding citizen’s right to bear arms. (What legislative body wants to get rid of the Second Amendment?) But what wasn’t predictable was a recent poll of Nevadans. Turns out 79 percent support that decision. Really? Only 79 percent? From gun park-loving Nevadans, some of whom support Sharron Angle’s “Second Amendment remedies”? It’s a bit hard to swallow that 21 percent either aren’t sure about whether gun ownership is an inalienable right or favor the slippery slope of what gun bans would mean. Could it be they’re withholding support until the survey is less about gun ownership and more about responsible gun ownership? There’s a Second Amendment remedy we can get behind.
