Rotten Tomatoes: The Girl Who Played With Fire

In The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, we met investigative reporter Mikael Blomkvist (Nyqvist) and troubled hacker Lisbeth Salander (Rapace) and watched them develop a mutual respect and attraction, eventually teaming up to solve a decades-old murder mystery. Perversely, The Girl Who Played With Fire now keeps the two apart for the entirety of its running time. It also presents a much less compelling mystery, a twisty conspiracy plot that burdens Lisbeth with a convoluted, grim back story. Rapace is still fierce as Lisbeth, but Nyqvist is adrift without her support, and the plot is dull and muddy. The third installment has already been released in Europe; let’s hope for a more compelling resolution to the trilogy.
