Bottle shock I’m not normally a sucker for hype, but when I saw “highest rating ever” for a silver tequila by the Beverage Testing Institute, I buckled and bought my first bottle of Jose Cuervo Platino. I’ve sampled most of the middle-end blue-agave-based products, and until now Partida Silver was my drink of choice. Not anymore. -Ken Miller, contributing editor

About Times It happens rarely enough that we should salute it when it does: A serious novel by a serious Las Vegas writer is taken seriously by the New York Times Sunday Book Review. Last week, Maile Chapman’s Your Presence Is Requested at Suvanto got a mostly praiseful review that, we hope, gives her a deserved sales bump. -Scott Dickensheets, editor

Home strife Homicides in Clark County dropped by 3 percent in 2009, an encouraging fact that may hide a troubling one: The percentage of homicides linked to domestic violence grew. In fact, Sheriff Doug Gillespie says domestic-violence calls are up across the board, and the department is concerned. -Abigail Goldman, staff writer

Good fish Much as I revel in an all-you-can eat bargain, with sushi you usually get what you pay for. I recently lunched with a visiting buddy—who had an expense account, thankfully—at Sushi Roku inside the Forum Shops. Tough to find better salmon, Spanish mackerel or sea urchin anywhere in town. -Spencer Patterson, A&E editor

Bikini power Nothing says female empowerment like bikinis. That was the party line May 24 at Planet Hollywood, where thousands of women in skimpy suits spelled out C-O-S-M-O for Cosmopolitan’s Bikini Bash. Sure, some women might find modeling nearly naked for free the height of empowerment. Me, I’ll take a cheeseburger. -Sarah Feldberg, online editor
