Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was a man haunted by depression and anxieties who, in 1877, tried to put his homosexuality behind him, married a woman, then unsuccessfully tried to drown himself in the freezing Moskva River before running off to Southern Europe. Around this time he wrote his “Fourth Symphony.” Some say this emotional turmoil influenced his creative genius. The dramatic composition was dedicated to his patron, Nadezhda von Meck, and is regarded as one of the composer’s best works. Listen for yourself Saturday, when the Las Vegas Philharmonic performs Tchaikovsky’s “Fourth.” The evening also includes the world premiere of Samuel Adler’s “Drifting on Winds and Currents,” commissioned for the Phil by Dr. Lewis Aronov, in honor of his late wife, Gladys. Also, Max Bruch’s “Violin Concerto” will be performed by 17-year-old violinist Laura Liu from Texas.
