Clapton’ is a living legend puttering about on new album

Clapton
Two and a half stars

At this point in his career, Eric Clapton has nothing left to prove, so there isn’t anything wrong with his coasting through a bunch of old blues and jazz tunes and a tiny bit of original material on his latest self-titled studio album. Clapton is an excellent guitarist and an underrated singer, and he surrounds himself with both top-notch studio musicians and various well-known guest stars (including Sheryl Crow, Wynton Marsalis and JJ Cale). The playing on Clapton is tasteful, pleasant and completely boring, a bland wash of restrained competence. The New Orleans-style jazz of “My Very Good Friend the Milkman” and “When Somebody Thinks You’re Wonderful” provides a bit of liveliness, but otherwise this album is the sound of a living legend puttering about.
