Country crossover stories are a dime a dozen these days. (Are you listening, Kid Rock and Taylor Swift?) The Western style of music has produced great sonic hybrids since its inception, with rockabilly being one of country’s early experiments. The term is derived from the rock and “hillbilly” genres, and it was popularized in the 1950s by notable acts such as Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash and The King himself.

Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend
April 21-24, times and prices vary
The Orleans, 365-7075

This weekend you’ll find both the music and subculture at the self-proclaimed “biggest rockabilly party in the world.” Learn how to jive and enter a competition, or rock your retro swimwear at the festival’s Tiki Pool Party. Also planned are a vintage car expo (with all vehicles made before 1963), burlesque performances and a vintage fashion show.

And about that fashion—don’t forget your saddle shoes and throwback wayfarers! You’ll want to have some true rockabilly style when rockin’ around the clock this weekend.
