First of all, I hate bananas. I hate, hate, hate bananas. Hate it when they even touch bread and their smell lingers or when someone slips them into a smoothie and tries to play it off. “There’s only a little bit.” Psh. I can tell. But you know what I hate more than bananas? People who won’t try new dishes because they don’t like oysters/onions/olives/mushrooms/beef cheeks. You never know until you try. That explains how I ended up eating the Monkey Special ($9.95) at En Sushi and Robata Grill in Anthem. The oddball appetizer from chefs Yoshi Park and Shawn Kim stacks sliced raw tuna on top of spicy crab on top of tempura-battered and deep-fried banana and then finishes the whole thing off with sesame dressing and unagi sauce. It’s a mouthful, and, as much as I hate to admit, it’s delicious. Banana and everything.
