As We See It

A thought on the ‘recovery’ of sex workers

The City of Las Vegas Municipal Court is involved in some interesting makeovers. Through its WIN (Women in Need) program, the court oversees the “recovery” of sex workers with at least three prior convictions for charges related to soliciting prostitution. Fifty-year-old Denise Jackson joined the ranks of graduates at a ceremony last week, saying goodbye to a criminal history of more than 200 arrests/citations and more than 6,400 days in jail spread over 27 years on the street. She now has a job, a GED and renewed bonds with her family. While this is truly inspiring, the International Union of Sex Workers might argue that the laws behind all those arrests were unjust in the first place.
