Celebrate the Kentucky Derby with a classic mint julep

Sip on a mint julep (pictured) this Saturday while watching the race. The recipe below is courtesy of Rhumbar at the Mirage.

While the Run for the Roses is said to be the fastest two minutes in sports, consider taking more time than that to savor the race’s traditional libation: the mint julep.

The customary cocktail has been served at the Kentucky Derby for over 70 years now and is a favorite not only at Churchill Downs, but all across the deep South.

And why wouldn’t it be? The bourbon-based drink is basically a twist on the well-known mojito and is just as refreshing as the tropical cocktail.

So make yourself your own Millionaire’s Row this Saturday by celebrating in style with this classic concoction, courtesy of Mirage’s Rhumbar lounge.

Woodford Reserve Mint Julep

4 sprigs fresh mint

1 teaspoon sugar

1 oz. water

2 oz. woodford reserve

Method: Muddle three sprigs of mint, sugar and water in the bottom of a traditional copper cup. Fill cup with crushed ice. Add Woodford Reserve and stir. Dust fourth mint sprig with sugar for garnish.
