Would you believe me if I said you can find the best Taiwanese bao in town inside a hair salon? It’s true. Since Strip-pedigreed chef Sheridan Su (formerly of Comme Ça, Wazuzu and Social House) set up the Great Bao inside Touch Salon and Spa in a nondescript strip mall at Tropicana and Decatur, he’s been serving some banging bao.

The Great Bao
Inside Touch Salon and Spa
4965 W. Tropicana Ave., 900-2168.
Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.

Bao—a filled Asian bun that could be described as a Wonder Bread taco—is all about the stuff inside, and the Great Bao’s include some delectable options: marinated chicken, braised beef, roast duck and an immaculate pork belly. Su lavishes the proteins with TLC and complements them with the simplest of garnishes, including pickled mustard greens, crushed peanuts and hoisin sauce.

A com-bao can be yours for $10: a bao trio (mix and match!) and a drink. Go for the housemade Italian peach soda or ask for a raspberry cream. Italian sodas and bao in a hair salon? Makes perfect sense to me.
