The Details

Shibuya
MGM Grand, 891-3001.
Sunday-Thursday, 5-10 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 5-10:30 p.m.

If you wanna eat Japanese beef, shouldn’t you go to a Japanese restaurant? MGM Grand’s Shibuya is easy to miss as you wander this huge casino space, and it’s listed by most behind celebrated sushi spots like Bar Masa, Nobu and Yellowtail. But the food is still impeccable and the preparation pristine; everything is plated with respect, even reverence. That makes Shibuya the perfect place to sample true Kobe beef. It’s not on the menu, but you can get a four-ounce taste of Japanese tenderloin or ribeye for $48. Mine was served with musky, delicious roasted enoki mushrooms and a little vial of black truffle oil, you know, to add even more flavor to the world’s most flavorful cow. Sure, this stuff is expensive, but I’d rather savor a few melts-like-butter bites of this beyond-rich beef—served simply, like they do at Shibuya—than gorge on a plate-sized steak.
