Beach Hut Deli is a chain eatery with locations all over California, but the Henderson location feels like a local spot thanks to a casual vibe, laid-back music and a nice, shady patio. Whether it gets lost in its massive Eastern Avenue strip mall (like so many restaurants have) or emerges as the next great sandwich shop in the Valley depends, in my opinion, on improving its bread.

The sandwich selection is there, and appropriately beachy: the North Shore is stacked with ham, turkey, pastrami, jack cheese and Italian dressing, and the Surfin’ Pig is a behemoth—lots of ham with avocado, bacon and cream cheese. The pastrami, chopped up with Swiss and avocado on the Malibu, is particularly impressive. There are hot and cold variations, veggie options, hot dogs and shareable munchies like the Marley Nachos. But the rolls—so important in sandwich construction—are dry, flaky and flavorless. Until Beach Hut upgrades its bread, try ordering your meal on toasted garlic cheese sourdough.
