Social media has so thoroughly permeated our lives that it now has its very own film festival: The first Social Media Film Festival kicks off this weekend with three days of movies exploring the intersection of technology and social interaction. It starts on First Friday with a free screening of Twittamentary, a documentary showcasing Twitter users across the U.S., at /usr/lib inside Emergency Arts. In keeping with the interactive subject matter, a TweetBeam projection of live tweets will be shown during the event (yes, this means that attendees are encouraged to tweet throughout the movie).

The main festival program runs all day September 8 in the convention space at the Mirage, with two screening rooms devoted to features and shorts programs, including documentaries about the influence of social media in political movements, corporate branding and personal relationships. There will also be guest speakers and panel discussions on branding, social change via social media and the creation of visual effects. The festival wraps up Sunday night, September 9, with a free party at the Royal House featuring the documentary Craigslist Joe (about a man who spent a month living off of services from Craigslist) and a live performance by local band Lucky Cuss.
