Thursday, July 25: Las Vegas 51s vs. Reno Aces (baseball)

How’d we pick among the locals’ 24 remaining home games? Easy, this one’s the next Budweiser Dollar Beer Night. That plus a matchup with last-place Reno are the makings of a fun night out.

Friday & Saturday, August 23 & 24: Sollenberger Classic (high school football)

Four-time defending state champion Bishop Gorman plays in—and hosts—this two-day preseason clash between Nevada and Arizona prep powers. Get your first look at the 2013 Gaels when they take on Mountain Pointe on Friday, then come back the next night to see 2012 state runner-up Liberty battle Tucson’s Salpointe Catholic.

Saturday, September 7: UNLV vs. Arizona (college football)

The Wildcats aren’t expected to be BCS contenders this year, but even a middle-of-the-pack Pac 12 team could spell trouble for the Rebels. Which just means you need to pack some extra enjoyment into the tailgate portion of your day.

Sunday, September 8: NFL opening weekend (pro football)

Whether your tradition takes you to a noisy sports book or a quiet(er) couch, this is the day to root for your hometown team, your bets and your fantasy squad, though not necessarily in that order.

Saturday, September 14: Floyd Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez (boxing)

Surprise, surprise: A fight everyone wanted to see is actually happening. Can the 36-year-old Mayweather hold off a man 13 years his junior? Is Canelo ready for a stage this big? Will you find a way into the crazy-sold-out MGM Grand Garden Arena? Only one thing is certain: One of these guys is leaving with his first career loss ... unless it’s a draw.

Saturday, October 19: Las Vegas Wranglers vs. Utah Grizzles (ice hockey)

We could tell you to circle December 16—date of the first midnight game—but hard-core puck heads won’t be able to wait that long. They’re already scouting out face paint for this season opener.
