As We See It

Las Vegas needs more protection, maybe

Image
You’re being watched, but only on the Strip.

File this one firmly under “cold comfort.” Las Vegas is still stinging from news last month that the federal government cut off funding to the Southern Nevada Counter-Terrorism Center, which helps keep our city safe from attacks. Then this week came news that the Las Vegas Strip (which is not under city jurisdiction, by the way) has 37 new surveillance cameras perched atop traffic poles, courtesy of a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. While these will certainly come in handy should any attacks occur on our most famous roadway, it’s hard to not see this as the height of hypocrisy. So Las Vegas clearly needs a greater level of protection ... but there’s no long-term funding for the center that does just that?
