The fact that We Are Scientists is opening for The Offspring at the Cosmopolitan is almost as head-scratching as when The Hives opened for Pink at Mandalay Bay. We suspect that The Offspring, what with their recent ill-advised foray into dance-rock, might be looking to cull some street cred from an indie-rock band that actually knows a thing or two about making people dance. While W.A.S. has yet to enjoy success on the level of mid-’00s peers like The Rapture and Bloc Party, the New Yorkers are more than a leftover from the post-punk revival boom. The band’s crunchy, hip-shaking tunes come with clever lyrics and even cleverer music videos (check out “Chick Lit” and the Akiva Schaffer-directed “Great Escape”) that have helped build a devoted fanbase. That wit translates well to the high-energy live show— a synth-and-bass-infused dance party that should seem right at home at the Boulevard Pool, even if The Offspring doesn’t.
