1. Single “Peaches” took a while to break, but when it finally did, its perfect indie-pop construction refused to let go. This is one of the finest songs of the year, and a perfect representation of what Echo Park, California, band In the Valley Below can do at its best—layers of substance, interesting synth fills and a damn catchy chorus (“Working on a feeling/Breaking down the ceiling/Digging up a deep end/Freezing on the beaches/Reaching for the sweetest, sweetest peaches”).

2. “Lover” is an excellent example of how the three band members are able to create something sonically greater than what you’d expect from a trio. Angela Gail Mattson’s ethereal keyboards are the perfect backdrop for the harmonies she puts together with Jeffrey Jacob Mendel.

3. The secret of the Sayers Club will get out eventually, right? Though the unique and intimate venue has drawn well at times, this one felt like I was watching at a private party. With the SLS double down on music (see: Foundry Hall moving into the old Life space), hopefully Sayers will continue to be a viable venue for touring indie bands.

4. A slowed-down, methodical, mid-set cover of Pink Floyd’s “Money” gave the trio a chance to journey into the world of the psychedelic. Drummer Joshua Clair showcased his skills, pounding the kit so hard his almost became the lead instrument at points.

5. It will be interesting to see what ITVB comes up with next. Touring extensively behind 2013 album The Belt, the band admitted it hasn’t had much time to write. One wonders if, with more fame, they’ll adopt a poppier sound, or add maybe more players to the mix.
