Elixir cocktail lounge delivers much-needed nightlife to Henderson

First draft pick: Elixir may be a cocktail lounge, but you can get a cold one there, too.

It’s not often I make the trek to Green Valley from my southwest abode—I had to use Google Maps for directions—but tonight is a special occasion: It’s the opening of Elixir, an upscale lounge by the people behind the two Remedy’s taverns in Henderson.

We’re greeted by a sign with a red chandelier and an upbeat energy before we even enter the venue. Once the elevator from the parking lot opens, everything is suddenly crimson: billowing velvet curtains, tufted curved booths, cascading crystal chandeliers—not in just any shade, but a sultry Jessica Rabbit red. The chords of “Love Potion No. 9” from Art Vargas (formerly of Legends in Concert) and his brassy band fill the air.

The Elixir martini (left), one of the Henderson watering hole's specialty cocktails.

We’re warmly received, seated and handed menus. Having eaten dinner, we go straight to the cocktail offerings, which include a handful of classics ($7-$9) and two specialties: the Elixir Margarita ($8) and the Elixir ($9). I prefer my margs at Mexican joints rather than industrial-chic lounges, but the Elixir, a martini glass (also red, and sinfully so) of Absolut Citron and PAMA liqueur, fits the bill just fine. Additionally, the after-dinner drinks and dessert menu offer some serious sweet-tooth satiation. The Firehouse ($8), a cappuccino mixed with Fireball cinnamon whiskey and butterscotch liqueur, makes an excellent match for the banana fritters ($6), handmade and deep-fried to a golden brown, smothered in Fireball caramel sauce.

As evening winds into night, the chameleon nature of the space becomes more apparent. It starts out with a date-night atmosphere, then takes on a more casual air with TV and gaming diversions, before assuming a night-owl feel with a 3-6 a.m. reverse happy hour. Elixir complements nearly every local lifestyle—and helps fill a big void in nightspot-deficient Henderson.

Success may yet come to this seemingly cursed location—the last ill-fated occupant was Daddy Mac’s—which will hopefully necessitate another Elixir, this time in the southwest.
