Nightlife news & notes: A scotch tasting at Artisan and more

Image
Sip on some scotch Friday at the Artisan.

It’s said that red wine is healthy for the heart, but Café Nikki is giving you an even better reason to drink the stuff on Friday. Sip a multitude of red, white and sparkling Australian wines from 6 to 9 p.m. while you peruse art by participants in Opportunity Village’s Art Enrichment Program. Tickets are $20 and all proceeds benefit the local non-profit.

Free booze and education? Don’t get too excited, college students—the free education is about the booze. Join expert David Cheonis as he pours samples of scotch from Glen Grant, Bowmore, Auchentoshan and Yamazaki Friday at 6 p.m. at the Artisan. —Mark Adams

With its row of bars and cover-free nightspots, Downtown has become a beacon for pub-crawling locals, but a successful tour requires following a few basic rules: Wear comfortable shoes, start at Insert Coin(s) (the only place you’re likely to encounter a line) and limit yourself (and your friends) to one beverage per bar so no one gets too drunk to complete the journey. Finally, after your last drink, make a beeline for 24-hour diner Dupar’s and go to work on a tall glass of water and a plate of butter-soaked pancakes. Your body will thank you in the morning.

It’s time to put your passion for rum to work doing more than mixing mean Cuba Libres. Tommy Bahama is searching for their first “rumologist,” an experienced bartender or booze expert who will win $50,000 for hosting events, creating rum programs for Tommy Bahama restaurants and crafting new cocktails to pair with the chain’s island-inspired cuisine. To enter, submit a 45- to 60-second video at facebook.com/tommybahama before August 22. —Sarah Feldberg
