On the dawning of Vegas’ new neon age

Brace yourselves, Las Vegans. Your beacon of neon opens October 27.

Among ex-mayor Oscar Goodman’s more poignant statements over the years was his comment that neon is to Las Vegas what jazz is to New Orleans. He was right. Neon and signage are a huge chunk of our legacy and, in most cases, all that’s left to tell the layered story of our town.

These stylized fonts, bulky metal boxes and old light bulbs hold so much history: from local business to segregation, 20th century celebrated landmarks and colorful stories. The Neon Museum’s official opening on October 27 is as much a gift to the locals as it is a tourist attraction. We can hardly wait.
