Trying to unlock Escape Vegas XXX, Las Vegas’ new adult-themed escape room

Escape Room XXX

A murderous stripper is on the loose. She has already knifed the patrons and her stripper colleagues, and now she’s after you. Can your crew find its way out of the Strip club before it’s too late?

For my friends and me, the answer was no. We were bested by an imaginary stripper and the puzzles of Escape Vegas XXX, described by its creators as the “world’s only adult-oriented escape room.” But we had a lot of smart fun in the process, working through some decidedly sexy clues. No spoilers, but some of my favorite puzzles included lace bras and sky-high stripper heels.

Escape Vegas XXX—located inside Déjà Vu Love Boutique—might follow a tantalizing theme, but this is a traditional (and sometimes difficult) escape room. Granted, if it gets too challenging, you can always request a hint by way of the provided walkie-talkie.

“We’ve had nothing but excellent feedback,” says game creator and store GM Megan Swartz. She says that most visitors are pleasantly surprised because they didn’t expect it to be a “real” escape room. Visitors have complimented her on the theme, the difficulty level and the setup.

Despite the triple X in the title, nothing felt too raunchy. I’d give it maybe a PG-13 or R rating if it were a movie. The website recommends Escape Vegas XXX for team building "for your staff, co-workers, school, club or other group." Swartz says a group of local elementary school teachers came through and "loved it." Still, before booking that corporate event, I’d make sure your corporation is pretty open-minded.

For those who dislike haunted houses and jump scares, it’s worth noting that nothing is truly frightening about the game titled Massacre at the Vu. (That is unless you’re afraid of failure. Some of the clues will leave you feeling stumped … at least for a while.) There are no actors hiding in corners, and you’re not actually locked inside the rooms, so you can walk out at any moment. Not that you’ll want to.

Swartz has always loved puzzles. One day, she looked at her store’s cavernous back storage room and thought it would be the perfect spot for an escape room. Soon, her crew was constructing new walls, hidden safes and a custom-built stripper stage.

The creative risk has paid off. According to Swartz, 99 percent of the guests who come in for the escape room have never been in the store before. And about 70 percent of them stay to shop after. Swartz plans to reimagine the game every year with a new theme and new puzzles, so those customers will have a reason to return.

In May, the store plans to open a second puzzle room, this one titled Mr. Grey’s Red Room of Pain, inspired by a certain sexy book franchise. Puzzlers must race against the clock to save a tied-up Anastasia from Mr. Grey’s estate.

ESCAPE VEGAS XXX Located inside Déjà Vu Love Boutique , 3247 Sammy Davis Jr. Drive, 702-731-5655, escapevegasxxx.com. Ages 18 and up, $35 per person, open 24/7.
