If his past slam dunk contest injuries haven’t kept comedian Tom Segura away from pal Bert Kreischer, nothing will. Thankfully no tackle contests are scheduled as Segura and Kreischer partner for their “Go Deep: The Big Game Weekend” comedy show celebrating Las Vegas hosting the Super Bowl for the first time in history.

We caught up with the Cincinnati-born Segura, recently announced as the headliner of the Great Outdoor Comedy Festival in Spokane this summer, to explore this week’s Vegas plans.

You and Bert are co-headlining the MGM Grand Garden Arena the night before the Super Bowl. What are your plans for the game itself?

Well, we have huge plans for the whole week. We’re doing a lot of promotional stuff with the MGM Grand, so we’re doing a Punt Pass Kick thing, I’m hosting a blackjack tournament, and we’re doing a tailgate. And then for the big game, we’re actually planning on going. So it should be a whole week of festivities, this huge show Saturday night, and then it’ll be capped off by the game. So we’re excited.

Any predictions or wagers for the game? Are you a big Vegas sports book guy?

I’m not a big sports book guy, but I love, love football. So I am a Bengals fan first, but I’m very excited to see ... the game. I’ll definitely place a wager when I get there.

Have you seen the Sphere yet, or will this be your first opportunity?

This will be my first time. Bert went to a show. He saw U2 a month ago, and he said he was bawling his eyes out. It was one of the best experiences he’s ever had. But he cries a lot, so that’s not that notable. But he said it was incredible, as has everybody who I’ve spoken to that’s been there. So yeah, it’ll be my first time seeing it in person.

You moved to Austin within the past couple years. There’s also been a ton of comics that have left LA for Vegas. Can leaving Los Angeles make people better comics?

I saw a lot of people develop and thrive in LA. I mean, I’m one of them. I started stand-up in LA, and I very much enjoyed my time there for that. If you leave a market like LA, you’re obviously usually going to a smaller market, and that logically just presents more opportunities. But it is a case by case, city by city basis. You can move from there to a place that doesn’t have a great scene, and then that’s not going to be helpful. But I think a lot of people that have moved to Austin are doing very well with it.

Anything else you want folks to know about the show?

I can’t say what it is, but we have a big surprise for that show, and we are just super stoked. We never really had a chance to do something like this before. People seem to be really excited for it. I think it’s going to be a memorable evening. And I mean, it’s Vegas, so you go big. So we’re going big.
