Sphere has us shivering with antici...pation!
This week, Sphere Entertainment Co. announced that The Rocky Horror Picture Show will make its debut at the futuristic Las Vegas venue in 2027. The 1975 cult classic is set to be reformatted for Sphere's immersive environment, bringing its singular blend of camp, spectacle and audience participation to one of the most technologically ambitious screens ever constructed.
For decades, Rocky Horror has occupied a space all its own in popular culture. Equal parts midnight movie ritual and sci-fi spoof, the film follows newly engaged couple Brad and Janet after a car breakdown leaves them stranded at the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, Tim Curry's unforgettable mad scientist from the planet Transsexual. This stormy detour quickly spirals into a gleeful celebration of sexual liberation, self-expression and countercultural rebellion.
Few cinematic experiences invite audiences to become part of the performance quite so enthusiastically. And seeing that participatory chaos translated to Sphere feels like a fittingly extravagant next chapter for a movie and venue that has never played by the rules.
