The sketchbooks of artist KD Matheson show the workings of the mind behind some of the most otherworldly images in town

Artist KD Matheson creates paintings of an almost alien intensity. Possessed of a moody sci-fi ambiance—but not in a jumpy pop-culture kind of way—his pieces relocate the viewer from this mundane existence to an exotic mindscape that is partly familiar while being wildly new. To get a glimpse behind Matheson’s creative process, we asked him for these glimpses into his sketchbook.
