In July 2014, Jska Priebe and Mike and Dasha Biggs opened Spectral Gallery inside Downtown Spaces on Industrial Road. A place to showcase their dark, surrealist and fantastical artwork, Spectral has also been home to numerous group shows over the past two years, including a Star Wars -themed show and a tribute to Philip K. Dick. But now, Spectral’s owners have announced that the gallery will close its doors at the end of May.
“It mostly comes down to the difficulty of getting the revenue to run and grow the business,” Priebe says. “We never quite had enough buyers come out to our events. It was hard to get the general public to stray from the more known places in the Arts District.” Priebe added that the owners have plans for new projects that “would have been difficult to do while working full-time jobs and also running shows and managing the gallery.”
May 6 marked the closing reception of Spectral’s final exhibit, Superstition, along with a closing sale for the space, but it’s not the end of the Spectral collective altogether. Although the gallery will officially shutter on May 31, Priebe says the web store will continue to get stocked and updated with new work, and the trio plans to work together for pop-up shows and conventions.
