Attend this wedding expo … even if you’re not getting married

With no related questions appearing on any state ballots during this election cycle, the often-divisive issue of same-sex marriage has taken a backseat to Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and LBGT bullying. And while nobody denies the importance of those two topics, one fact remains: In most states, gays and lesbians are still barred from legally marrying their preferred partner.

It shouldn’t take a ballot question like Prop 8 to remember that. Supporting the cause of same-sex marriage needs to be done consistently, not just for the few months prior to Election Day. This Sunday, the “Same Love, Same Rights” Gay & Lesbian Wedding Expo returns to the JW Marriott in Summerlin. The expo showcases more than 50 gay-friendly businesses, including photographers, event coordinators, venues, cake decorators and even attorneys. Its Las Vegas debut last year, right on the heels of the first legal domestic partnerships in Nevada, attracted more than 400 attendees, many of whom weren’t even planning nuptials.

“The community comes out just to support the event. They realize that having a presence matters,” explains Cindy Sproul, co-owner of the Rainbow Wedding Network, the gay and lesbian wedding-planning resource website hosting the expo. “We often will see people who are just planning a birthday party come. They want to support those businesses that reach out to the (gay and lesbian) community.”

That is everyday, dollar-driven activism. No shouting or awkward signage required.
