Online poker has been illegal since 2006, but that’s about to change. Caesars is on board, and so is MGM, but not the Venetian and Palazzo’s Sheldon Adelson. He thinks it’s a bad idea because nothing could stop minors from placing bets. While Adelson is probably right, couldn’t the same reasoning be applied to the wireless betting devices given out at the Venetian sports book? They can be used in designated areas throughout the hotel property, including, say, Zine Noodles. Unless the restaurant has casino-grade security cameras installed in the ceiling—I’m pretty sure it doesn’t—who’s to say whether a child is pushing the buttons? A spokesperson said Adelson’s reservation was personal, not professional. And if Adelson stops Las Vegas Sands from pursuing an online poker license, I suppose we’ll have to applaud his fortitude. But if he throws his company’s hat into the online poker ring while feigning moral superiority, well, that’d be less impressive.
