As We See It

So long, sweet carousel

The Carousel at the District is no longer at the District. Now, what could take its place …

According to the website Livability.com, Henderson is one of the top 12 family destinations for Spring Break, joining Lafeyette, Louisiana, Charleston, South Carolina and Sarasota, Florida.

Henderson, the website says, was chosen because of its family-friendly activities, such as Lake Mead Recreation Area and Ethel M. Chocolates Factory. But first, it mentions the Carousel at the District, stating that it “comprises 32 animals—including horses, a zebra, panda bear and more—and two chariots.”

The problem here isn’t just that Henderson seems an odd inclusion as a Spring Break spot, it’s that the Carousel at the District, a centerpiece in the roundabout near Whole Foods, West Elm and the Cheesecake Factory, has recently been removed.

We contacted the District's new management and were told this by Kimberly Daskas, spokeswoman for Vestar Property Management: "Vestar’s purchase and management of The District at Green Valley Ranch will include many changes and enhancements meant to breathe new life into the project, re-creating the vibrant, shopping and dining experience that the original project was meant to be. The carousel was not part of the overall purchase of the center, and while it will be missed, the change will allow opportunity for new management to further enhance the shopping experience for our valued patrons."

Meanwhile, if we want to keep our vacation list status, we gotta act quick.

Here are five other options for the landscaped area, once home to the carousel:

Jeff Koons' "Puppy"

Jeff Koons' "Puppy"

1. A labyrinth for suburbanites to to walk through meditatively.

2. Jeff Koons’ giant sculpture, “Puppy”

3. The Harmon (just kidding)

4. A topiary garden

5. Daily performances of Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” (Random, but why not? The story is an American classic and Henderson is an American story of its own.)

And where should one take a carousel without a home? Here are some suggestions:

1. My living room

2. The Harmon

3. At the end of Zzyzx Road

4. Any abandoned strip mall in the Valley

5. Crystals
