From providing shelter for the animal friends of domestic abuse victims to raising funds for cancer research, community service is tied to great recreation in October.

October is sweet, and not just because of all the Halloween candy. Here in Las Vegas, it’s jam-packed with opportunities to have fun and benefit worthy causes in our community and beyond. Here are a few to get you started on that karma bank:

ONE DRUNK PUPPY

What you get: Appetizers, DJs spinning, a silent auction and an extensive tasting of world-class international spirits—including wines, sakes and beers—both poolside at the Sway Pool Lounge and inside the adjoining Veil Pavilion.

Who you help: Noah’s Animal House, which provides vital care and a safe place to board the pets of clients of the Shade Tree Shelter, who are affected by domestic abuse.

The Details: October 13, 6-9 p.m., $45 in advance and $50 at the door, Silverton Casino Hotel. Click here for more info.

PIE IT FORWARD

What you get: Pumpkin chiffon pie made fresh with graham-cracker crust, layers of fluffy pumpkin and whipped cream and a garnish of candied walnuts.

Who you help: Bright Pink, “the only national nonprofit organization focusing on the prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer in young women while providing support for high-risk individuals.”

The Details: Through October, $6.95 per slice ($1 of which goes to Bright Pink), Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak and Stone Crab at the Forum Shops. Click here for more info.

RUN FOR THE HORSES

What you get: A family- and pet-friendly 5K fun run and 1-mile obstacle course with prizes, snacks, vendors, info booths, entertainment by DJ Will and appearances by/photos with the UNLV Mounted Unit’s equine officers Rebel and Pride.

Who you help: The horses, of course, who need the community’s support to ensure they have the best care and equipment so they can continue to keep campus safe and do educational outreach across the Valley.

The Details: October 27, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., $15 for one event or $25 for both (free entry for spectators), UNLV track. Click here for more info.
