UNLV is handing out around 3,000 degrees this week to future lawyers and doctors, tomorrow’s educators and engineers, and even one late night talk show host.

That’s because Jimmy Kimmel, former Rebel and host of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, is receiving an honorary degree at this Sunday’s afternoon commencement ceremony.

The TV host was chosen to receive the honor “for his support of UNLV, the Southern Nevada community, local charitable organizations and for being a longtime Runnin’ Rebel fan,” according to a UNLV representative who confirmed Kimmel will accept his honorary degree in person.

UNLV’s honorary degree recipients are initially selected by president Neal Smatresk’s cabinet, but also must be approved by the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents. The school is also presenting an honorary degree during the morning commencement ceremony to Samuel S. Lionel, a founder of and partner at the Lionel Sawyer & Collins law firm.
