Welcome, sort of: Why was the Fabulous Las Vegas sign entrance designed backward?

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, the sign says. Only drivers can’t access the parking lot from the welcome side. Coming off the highway and heading toward the Strip, you have to pull a U-turn and enter from the farewell side. What the hell, Clark County?

In so many words, I asked a spokesman why the lot (installed in 2008 ... so yeah, I’m late to the party) was designed essentially backward. He pointed out that it’s mostly tourists making the pilgrimage to the sign, and most of them are coming from the Strip. Fair enough, but why didn’t the county make it accessible from both sides? Safety issues.

It’s hard to argue against practicality and safety in favor of personal desires, though if there’s any city where that argument might fly ...
