This is going to be the year I learn how to snowboard. I promise myself this every winter. Every year I book one lesson, seriously bruise my butt and decide to take the next 11 months off before returning to the mountain the following winter toting along the same promise. Last time I tried to snowboard I even cracked a wrist in a few places and spent the rest of the season in a pink Barbie cast.

But really, this is the year.
Located in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, the Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort is a mere 45 minutes from Las Vegas, well within too-close-for-excuses range. Already, early-season skiing and snowboarding are open daily on limited trails, including the beginner-friendly Rabbit Peak and intermediate slope The Strip, with private and group lessons available for both downhill sports. I’m just digging out my winter sweaters, but Mt. Charleston is expecting highs in the mid-30s and regular snow. When weather permits, all three chairlifts will open to serve the entire 11-trail resort.
