One Model Nation”

Dandy Warhols frontman Courtney Taylor joins the very small group of musicians who have created their own comics—and the even smaller group who have managed to produce rather good ones. Taylor crafted the story of One Model Nation with historian Donovan Leitch and artist Jim Rugg (Street Angel), and the fact that it revolves around a band means it’s a story Taylor’s well-suited to telling.

The band is Das Model, a fascist-fetishizing foursome in an alternate history Germany of 1977. The industrial punk-rock band becomes incredibly popular with the Red Army Faction, and thus very unpopular with the authorities. Perched between fame and infamy, it seeks to find its place in a society in transition. It’s perhaps telling that the band is presented as a sort of half-forgotten legend, burning brightly for a single year before disappearing from the public’s consciousness.
