10 thoughts from a fantasy football junkie

You’ve drafted your squad. Now what?

1. Never be satisfied with your team. I’ve found trades somewhat hard to accomplish in fantasy football, particularly 10-team leagues. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. If you’re shallow at running back but notice another team owner could use a wide receiver, get a dialogue going. Nothing ventured, and all that.

2. Go to the waiver wire immediately after your draft. Trust me on this—drafts are crazy experiences. With a limited amount of time to make each pick, sometimes great players can slip through. While everyone else is busy admiring their current lineup, make yours even stronger by being diligent.

3. Watch the waiver wire all season long. Most leagues will allow endless waiver wire transactions. Take advantage. As players get hurt over the course of a season, no-names can become assets.

4. Check in occasionally to make sure your team is healthy. Practice throughout the week is a key factor in determining if your stars will play each weekend. One day out of practice is no cause for alarm. No practice at all is a huge red flag.

5. Don’t be afraid to scrap your defense. Yeah, you spent a valuable 7th round pick grabbing that elite defense. But if they’re not getting it done by week 5, cut bait and play the matchups. By then, you’ll have a good idea of the weaker and stronger Ds.

6. Don’t think too hard when it comes to kickers. Will his team struggle in the red zone? Is the game indoors? Will the game be close? Even if the answer to all those questions is yes, your kicker might still get zero points. Don’t waste the brain power.

7. Don’t bench your stars. You spent high draft picks on them for a reason. Don’t even think about benching them, regardless of matchup.

8. Don’t worry about bye weeks until the bye weeks arrive. Why stash a tight end on your roster for weeks when that space could be used for someone you need now? Hey, everyone deals with bye weeks. It’s part of the game.

9. Don’t be afraid to spend that No. 1 waiver priority. You’re in the league to win, right? If there’s a player available who you really want, spend the damn pick!

10. If you drafted a kicker before the final round, please send me your league info. To quote Liz Lemon, I want to go to there.
