R.C. Farms | April 6, 2011 | 9:54 a.m.
I went to take photos of R.C. Farms in North Las Vegas a few years ago for a story on recycling. The food waste from many casino buffets is collected and sent to the farm, where it’s used to feed pigs. After a tour of the nursery, I went to where the large pigs are fed. There is a long trough, and what looks like a tanker truck drives by and fills it with the slop. I was standing on a wall by the gate to the feeding area as this happened, and the pigs were really, really excited. I couldn’t help thinking that if I fell and the gate opened, I would be trampled to death by the hungry, eager pigs. I also thought about warning the pigs: “Stop! It’s a trick. They just want to fatten you up so that they can eat you!” But I like bacon and pork chops, so I didn’t say anything.
