MYSTIC MONA: Lofty Lessons for Lady Luck

A jackpot of gambling tips from Mona to you

Mona

Nothing pleases the atmospheric continuum in Las Vegas more than responsible gamblers. Yes, The Universe does bestow blessings upon those rare individuals who can play frequently, seem to be lucky often and truly enjoy their game. I'm devoting this week's column to the characteristics of a lucky gambler. Most of the thoughts listed below are for people who play machines, but gamblers who enjoy live action may find the ideas useful, too.

Lucky Gamblers ...

• Do not play when they're hungry, tired, cranky, angry, depressed, broke or have to pee.

• Have a workable gambling budget and know when they've won or lost enough.

• Do not borrow money to gamble or loan money to people for gambling.

• Have promotion cards with their favorite casinos' properties and take advantage of "comps" regularly.

• Take a vacation from gambling when their luck changes to unfavorable.

• Cash out and leave a machine when it hits the top jackpot.

• Gamble in safe places.

Mystic Mona's Lucky Suggestions:

• Only gamble where you're lucky.

• Go where you're lucky, safe and comfortable. If you rarely win at XYZ Casino, don't go to XYZ Casino! (I have a friend who swore by her machines at the grocery store and won $87,000 in one month—she never goes to casinos.)

Signs That It's Time to Relocate

Your luck:

• You don't smoke and someone sits down next to you, lights up and the smoke blows right at you. This is a signal for you to move to another machine or table. You'll find that you probably weren't that lucky up to that moment anyway (if you were, the luck there is over for the time being), so think of that person as someone who motivated you to move to a luckier place.

• A "slapper" sits next to you (I officially lay claim to this moniker). A "slapper" is someone who hits the keys so hard on a machine that it disturbs the whole row of players. This is a person of repressed anger and probably not very lucky. Maybe more people will stop doing it once they realize that it actually brings them bad luck with the hostility they generate.

• The machine doesn't work properly, you don't understand the game, it is too loud, or it's just not paying out.

• Someone makes you uncomfortable in any way or who's drunk, stinky, obnoxious or possesses any irritating habit.

• A person sits down next to you, doesn't put money into the machine and watches you play without your permission.

• You're gambling next to unlucky people. (You'll prefer to celebrate your wins with other people who typically win.)

• You're at a pub where the bartender is a "lurker"—the one who keeps coming by to peek at the cash/credit balance on your machine.

Tips That Will Make You Luckier And Your Gaming Budget Last Longer:

• Keep your left palm up and open on your lap while playing your favorite machine. The left side of our body is our receptive side, and when you leave that hand open it signals to your subconscious that you are open and ready to receive.

• When your left hand (that's the lucky hand) itches, hold the luck in by balling up your fist. If this happens while you're playing, keep your palm closed until the itch stops.

• When you win, give away 10 percent of your winnings/profit to someone as soon as possible: your main squeeze; the bartender at your favorite pub; a local charity; Mystic Mona (kidding—sort of); or that slot attendant who's been very attentive. This keeps the flow of money circulating and affirms that you know more winnings are forthcoming. Also, in numerology, the number 10 reduces to one, so giving this money away actually takes care of Number One. More positive energy means more luck.

How to Change Your Luck:

• No gambling at all for 10 days. For each of the 10 days, mail $1 anonymously to your favorite charity. I like HELP of Southern Nevada because they help women and children get restarted in the community. Remember, you have to give first to receive.

• Take a salt bath (one cup kosher or sea salt) upon rising with 10 drops of peppermint oil. You can do this in the shower too, just take a wet washcloth, sprinkle the peppermint oil on it, then the salt, and lightly go over your body—avoid the "privates." The peppermint oil might be too stimulating and the salt too abrasive. On Day 11, go to your favorite casino or pub and play using the tips listed above. Take only the amount you've allotted for that session and leave the ATM and credit cards at home.

If you can't stop gambling for 10 days, you may need more help. Please contact Gamblers Anonymous or similar support groups.
