Mash-Up

It’s Alive!

The world's top ultralounge just keeps getting better. Last week saw the introduction of Tabú's new industry night, IT, and the unveiling of new interactive light technology that is sure to win the club its fourth consecutive Club World Award. Its Reactrix system has been replaced by Montreal's Realisations' Human Locator (the same company behind effects at Teatro, Diego and Studio 54), a system that allows for layering images while still allowing partiers to physically affect the pretty pictures projected on the tables. Wave your hand in the air and wipe away the frost to reveal a nearly naked model. Or "grab" the image of a woman's eye and spin it like a DJ. Or "knock" fiery balls around over the top of a rocky background. Impressively, the system only reacts to heat. Set your drink down and nuthin'. Set your butt down and get some action.

MGM Grand has also increased the number of effects generators from three to five, with one in the Tantra Room and four placed in the main lounge area, and all have sharper clarity than the Reactrix system. "It opens Tabú up for a much more playful environment," says Kirvin-Doak's Craig Nyman, who reps the resort's nightspots. Company logos can be input into the system, he adds, and given the same special-effects treatments, opening the door for Tabú to get a bigger chunk of the lucrative corporate-party market.

But ultralounges don't live on lighting effects alone. DJ Frankie Anobile is in charge of bringing in a lineup of local and nationally known musical talent to ensure partiers have beautiful sounds to go with those pictures. With DJ P, the co-father of mash-ups, blowing the opening-night crowd away, followed by Jose 2 Hype and Chris Hornsby, Frankie's already off to a high-revving start.

Psst ... You Didn't Hear It From Us

Mike Fuller, N9NE Group's new corporate director of marketing, is already making himself felt at the Palms (and making the resort's venues more local-friendly) with Gossip Tuesdays at Ghostbar, a "simple tongue-in-cheek event dishing out weekly gossip on the influencers and trendsetters" in Vegas, he says. Guest DJs will surface occasionally but turntable duties will mostly be held by DJs Five, Stonerokk, OB One and Tino Sanchez. Designed to be a "carefree, cool spot for locals without any hoops" to jump through, Ghostbar also has a new sound system by Infinite Audio Systems, which has also wired up Miami's Club Space and New York's Pacha.

Because Global Movements Don't Count

"The record labels don't really want to do any [music] videos 'cause they feel dance music doesn't make enough money. But we all know it does."

—Kristine W, dance-music goddess and Vegas local.
