5 Questions with DJ VanCronkhite

Martin Stein

When your first name really is DJ (short for David Jr.), is it a surprise you take to the turntables and become one of Atlanta's hottest DJs?

What's the Atlanta club scene like?

The names that are coming through Atlanta these days is awesome. Toward the end of last year, I opened up for Junior Vasquez and Chus & Ceballos out of Madrid. They remixed Madonna's "Hung Up." We just had DJ Paolo. I opened up for Victor Calderone in October. I would say probably the past year and a half, we've pretty much brought the top names in the business.

Your parents are deeply religious and have started a church for the poor. How do they feel about you spending nights spinning for sinners?

My dad is my biggest fan. It's not like this was an easy thing to do (giving up a successful realtor career to be a DJ). ... There were definitely days when I thought this is crazy. I could've just turned back and run the other way, and if it wasn't for my family, telling me, "Keep going, you've done the right thing," I probably wouldn't have pushed through.

What can folks at Krave expect?

A lot of songs that they're going to be able to know but it's going to be different mixes that possibly they haven't heard before. ... My sound is definitely a good energy. It's a very sexy, percussive energy that I like to keep.

Any plans for Vegas in your off-hours?

A friend of mine is going to be there, and her mother lives out there, so we'll probably grab something to eat. I actually lived out there in '91 and '92. I'm sure it's totally different now because I see all the stuff. But I went to UNLV for a short bit of time. I would love to see some of the new stuff on the Strip. I want to ride some of those roller coasters.
