I dreamt I went in my ex-husband’s home with my son who was around 10 but in real life is 22. We waited in the kitchen for him to get home. He finally walked in and told me he had affairs while we were married, then left. His girlfriend then came home and went about her business. I always dream I go to his house. Why? –Linda, 60, Pittsburgh, PA

Lauri: Because you haven’t been able to let go of the break-up. You are in his kitchen because you may still be “hungry” for him in some way, hungry for what the two of you once had, perhaps. Waiting for him suggests there is something you are waiting for in real life. An apology? The fact that your adult son is about 10 is a reference to that point in time. You are “hungry” to turn back the clock and do things differently. The girlfriend is “going about her business” because you need to go about your own business now. These dreams are trying to tell you that that to move forward you can’t hang on to the past.

Linda replies: My marriage was a disaster in that he was abusive to me and my son, who was 7 when I left and 12 when the divorce became final. I left but gave him the house and even my ring because of his threats. I don’t like that he is in the house with another woman who is wearing my ring after I slaved over the house while he was drinking every night. I would like to go back and fight for the house and my dignity.
