Most anyone of relative intelligence can immediately decipher what “NYE” means in the world of celebrity-hosted holiday nightlife celebrations, but spanking new for 2009 is the widely exploited Memorial Day weekend acronym—“MDW.” We aren’t exactly sure why everyone started using this shorthand at the exact same time. We can only assume that when a holiday weekend reaches critical mass, the collective consciousness of nightlife marketers and clubgoers alike decides that an acronym is absolutely necessary, as it looks much better on fliers and strangely resembles an airport code, a destination devoted to just one thing—Party. Maybe it was the tens of thousands of clubgoers who eagerly packed our pool parties and who swelled nightclub lines to near-record levels, but we were thinking of something a bit more explanatory, like WMD: Weekend of Mass Destruction.
