Hot Spots: Star Wars Day, Cinco de Mayo, Snoop Dogg and more

May the 4th be with you! Celebrate Star Wars Day this weekend at the House of Blues.

One-Year Anniversary Party at Velveteen Rabbit Seems like yesterday we were walking on Main Street, wondering if we’d ever have to venture south of Casa Don Juan restaurant to grab a drink, and now one of the crown jewels of the Arts District is already commemorating its first year in business. The celebration will include myriad performers, live act Koocheekoo, fun noshes like cotton candy and a revival of VR’s seasonal cocktails. Or you could just have an IPA and shadowbox with the projection-mapped installation. May 1, doors at 7 p.m, free.

Tapping Party at Banger Brewing Get to know the Downtown brewery in an intimate setting Thursday night, all while supporting local charity New Vista. Your ticket scores you a flight of Banger’s craft brews, a pint of what really tickles your taste buds and a tour of the brewery, where the Banger crew will be on hand to inform and, more importantly, to enable your inner beer geek! May 1, 6 p.m., $25.

The Get Back with The Gaff at Beauty Bar How does the decade-plus Get Back solve the dilemma of keeping it funky and fresh? By occasionally signing on guest DJs from outside Sin City. For the May edition, we will see The Gaff, a DC-born, Canadian-raised producer/DJ who can merge familiar club and hip-hop tracks with funk, jazz and soul—or just mine his 10,000-plus record collection for a vinyl-only but genre-inclusive set. Bonus: Dude also plays flute. A solo would be fresh, indeed. May 2, doors at 10 p.m., $5 for men after 11 p.m.

Mario Lopez at Hyde Mr. A.C. Slater is back in town for another hosting gig, as the Saved by the Bell alum presides over a Cinco de Mayo (weekend) fiesta at the lakeside Bellagio nightspot. Lopez might have played a wrestler on the ’90s favorite, but the sports buzz will be all about boxing Saturday night, so arrive early for the lounge’s Mayweather vs. Maidana viewing party. May 3; fight viewing: doors at 5 p.m., $75; party: doors at 10 p.m., $30 men, $20 women.

Derby Day at Honey Salt Who cares about a bunch of racing horses? Gallop on down to favorite local eatery Honey Salt for the annual glugging of the Mint Julep, a refreshment if there ever was one. Booty abounds for those who correctly guess the stallions that cross the finish line first or best impress the judges of the “Best Hat Contest,” but the real prize—albeit one that can’t be won—is the drink that usually lasts longer than the race. May 3, 2-4 p.m., free.

The Snoopadelic Cabaret at Tao The Jitterbug meets “Drop It Like It’s Hot” Saturday night, when Snoop Dogg kicks off his Roaring ’20s-themed residency at the Venetian party emporium. The “speakeasy experience” features specialty acts and performances, but the main attraction will be the DJ set and live rhymes by Tha Doggfather himself. May 3, doors at 10 p.m., $50 men, $20 women.

Star Wars Day at House of Blues Crossroads Room Like most adult beverages, Star Wars somehow got an unofficial holiday, and May 4 is the day because “May the 4th” sounds like, well, you know. House of Blues is getting in on the fan frenzy by hosting a party that includes a screening of the very first film (aka Episode IV), Star Wars-themed drinks and dishes (because who doesn’t want to put something called Dagobah Swampfish in their mouth?) and, best of all, costume contests—including one devoted to Slave Leia. Fanboys, start your frothing. May 4, 8 p.m., free (attendees must RSVP at the event’s page on eventbrite.com).

Cinco de Mayo at Tacos & Tequila Cinco de Drinko is upon us—where will you be shooting tequila and making bad decisions? The fiesta will be going strong all weekend at the Luxor nosh spot, where shots of Cuervo and Dos Equis brews will only set you back $5. Celebrate the real deal Monday night with those same specials, live mariachis and eye candy courtesy of brunette beauty and Playboy model Jessica Burciaga. May 5, 7-9:30 p.m., free.
