Santana at House of Blues
Carlos Santana released another single last week from his upcoming world music album, Africa Speaks, out June 7 on Concord Records, and it’s a slow-burning, rhythmic rock anthem called “Yo Me Lo Merezco,” showcasing the powerful voice of Spanish singer Buika. She’s the guitar legend’s first female lead singer for an entire album, and Africa Speaks also marks Santana’s first collaboration with producer Rick Rubin.
Now in the seventh year of his House of Blues residency, Santana says he first conceptualized a record of African music almost 20 years ago but waited for these key players—and the music itself—to arrive organically. “I had to be patient knowing we could have never done it without Buika or the other musicians but especially for the songs. It’s hard to tell where one begins and the other one ends, working with Buika and Rick Rubin. Everything is just like that now; it’s cooked through and through. It’s an incredible opportunity to present to the world a real alternative frequency.” May 24-25, 7 p.m., $99-$250. –Brock Radke
