Doug Stanhope began his comedy career in 1990 at a Las Vegas open mic. Since then, it's been a largely uninterrupted, Popov vodka-fueled ascent to stardom—a string of high-profile television gigs, three wildly popular books, text chains with Johnny Depp in 'em. But he's never lost his affection for Vegas, and on May 19, he demonstrates it once again with the release of The Dying of a Last Breed, an 82-minute special filmed last year at the Plaza in Downtown.

Produced by local company Light Forge Studios—the creative crew behind such films as Thor at the Bus Stop (2009) and Popovich and the Voice of the Fabled American West (2014) and atmospheric music videos for Mark Stoermer, Melody Sweets and Same Sex Mary—Stanhope's latest touches on "topics as disperate as child fatalities, hotel chain misery and all the things you can do in Indiana," and is tellingly listed on Vimeo as "comedy/instructional." (Having attended several Stanhope shows over the past few years, I can vouch for the "instructional" elements of his comedy.
